Quilts are typically flat and rectangular, much like many drawings and paintings. Yet they are inherently sculptural as well, being textured and dimensional, constructed from many pieces and layers of a variety of materials. I believe the quilt as an artistic medium lends itself well to these more traditional forms of artistic representation. In my work I use the quilt as a canvas to record marks, text, and imagery, and to repurpose and reinterpret second-hand textiles.
I am drawn to the quilt as a medium for its long and rich history of keeping us warm, for being a creative outlet for many people all over the world when making an otherwise utilitarian object, and for the challenge it provides me to learn and contribute to it's craft. I utilize the language of quilt-making to explore ideas about everyday objects, art objects, and the intersection between Art and craft.
